Capturing Lived Experiences
The project aims to utilize to capture and explore the lived experiences of Black birthing women/people and how these experiences impact their mental health. By centering the voices and perspectives of Black individuals, this project seeks to address the gaps in understanding and advocacy related to reproductive justice and behavioral health within this population.
Stories Shaping Change
At the core of this initiative is a commitment to honoring lived birthing experiences through intentional storytelling and portraiture. In recent months, the project has continued to gather powerful narratives from birthing individuals who share their journeys in their own words. These reflections, spanning moments of joy, challenge, advocacy, and resilience, are thoughtfully paired with portraits that capture authenticity and agency, contributing to a growing archive that elevates lived expertise.
The team has prioritized trauma-informed, participant-led engagement and strengthened community partnerships to ensure the work remains ethical and culturally responsive. As the project evolves, plans are moving forward for a public showcase and broader integration of these stories into educational, research, and advocacy spaces. Together, these efforts are helping to deepen understanding and expand the impact of maternal health storytelling.

PhotoVoice Portrait Series
The images below represent mothers who participated in the PhotoVoice Project. Each portrait reflects personal strength, lived experience, and the power of storytelling through visual expression. Guided by the participants themselves, these images capture authenticity, resilience, and truth while honoring the voices behind each story.
Together, these portraits form a visual testament to the impact of lived expertise and the importance of being seen, heard, and valued.
